I led the design of a mobile-first clean energy mobile app aiming to provide customers with a consistent energy bill that’s offset with clean energy.

THE PROBLEM

Many people struggle to understand their energy bill and changing prices make it difficult to plan for future bills, especially during high-usage months.

Wireframes and concept testing

A few things we wanted to include in our content & design strategy were visualizations or trend lines showing ones’ energy usage, educational content to concisely explain complex aspects of the utility process, and reassurance for customers to know that they are putting clean energy back into the grid.

We used feedback from past and existing customers to jumpstart our designs and layout and then tested a few different layouts with employees at the company who were signing up to become our Alpha users.

Visual design

I followed our design system but also explored ideas that I thought would compliment or elevate what we had to work with.

One example being the use of bespoke graphic of the closest national park to the customers location or one of their choosing. While we didn’t move forward with that concept, it’s still a favorite of mine in terms of adding an unexpected visual touch.

While our brand was a bit more approachable in terms of colors and content strategy, we wanted to ensure the design came off as sophisticated as opposed to being too playful.

Alpha + Beta

The app was launched as an Alpha and Beta for a number of employees. This allowed us to gather feedback and make changes quicker as we had easier access to users. I left Inspire before this could be launched to the public, but the project was unfortunately stopped as they were going through an acquisition by Shell plc.
